 Judicial Education

The scope and nature of the work of the Standing Committee on Judicial Education, Ethics & Professional Development (aka “Judicial Education”) includes authorization to:

  1. Advocate for improvements in judicial education, training and professional development;
  2. Organize, establish and implement a mentoring program for trial judges; and
  3. Organize, establish and implement a program of orientation for newly elected and/or appointed Louisiana trial judges.

The Standing Committee on Judicial Education is divided into three (3) subcommittees to include:

  1. Professional Development
  2. Mentor
  3. Judicial Orientation & Training

The Chair of the Committee on “Judicial Education” automatically becomes the Chair of the Professional Development Subcommittee. The Chairs of the Professional Development, Mentor and Judicial Orientation Subcommittees of the Standing Committee on “Judicial Education” serve through appointment by the President.

The Louisiana Judicial College provides quality continuing legal education for Louisiana's judges. Continuing legal education courses focus on new law, ethics and cutting-edge issues. As lawyers, judges are required to attend a minimum of 15 hours of continued legal education every year --- one hour of which must be on legal ethics, professional responsibility and rules of conduct.

Topics including recent developments in juvenile law, tort law, civil law, criminal law, interdiction procedures, evidentiary/procedural issues in tort and first-degree murder cases, waiver of counsel, eyewitness perception and memory, and domestic and elder abuse were among the highlights of continuing legal education programs sponsored by the Judicial College in 2004 for Louisiana’s judges. Over 900 members of the judiciary took part in sessions, which featured some 100 speakers. The College continued to issue its Criminal Law Newsletter and, in cooperation with the Louisiana District Judges Association, published the Louisiana Capital Crimes Bench Book.

Judges can contact Billie Bennett with the Louisiana Judicial College at judicialcollege@law.lsu.edu or (225) 578-8825 with any questions.
